SERVICES

You can be assured that our Neurology team has a commitment to excellence when it comes to the level of care we provide. We perform a wide range of different neurological evaluations and diagnostic testing. The information regarding each type of assessment is provided below, although this list is not all inclusive.

THE NEUROLOGICAL ASSESSMENT

The neurological history and examination is unique in Medicine. Whereas doctors can see skin conditions, broken bones, and feel many organs in the body, it is usually not possible to directly see a neurological problem. As a result, we need to perform a specialized examination following a history in order to see how the nervous system is functioning.

NERVE CONDUCTION STUDIES AND ELECTROMYOGRAPHY (EMG)

Nerve conduction studies (NCS) and Electromyography (EMG) are used to study the function of nerves and muscles in the body. They are the most useful test for examining these two tissues, as MRI scans and other forms of testing are most often not helpful

ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY (EEG)

Electroencephalography (EEG) is the best test for analyzing brain function. While an MRI can take a picture of the brain to see what it looks like, the EEG will assess to see how the brain is functioning. This is most important for detection of seizures or forms of dementia, but we also rely upon EEG to help us in patients with coma.

LUMBAR PUNCTURE

A lumbar puncture is used to diagnose meningitis, and is helpful in diagnosing some other brain and spinal cord disorders where inflammation or infection can occur.

Often, a lumbar puncture is feared as a terrible procedure. In most cases, this is not necessary, as the procedure is done using anesthesia to block feelings of pain, and the needle is fairly thin. Many patients will not have the bad experience that they anticipate.

INJECTIONS

There are a number of different injections that can be performed as therapy in neurological conditions. These can be performed for conditions ranging from headache, spastic muscles, movement disorders, neuralgia, and nerve entrapments.

AUTONOMIC ASSESSMENTS

The autonomic nervous system controls many involuntary body functions, including heart rate, blood pressure, perspiration, bowel and bladder control, and digestion.

There are conditions affecting the autonomic nervous system, ranging from forms of peripheral neuropathy to conditons within the brain. Diabetic neuropathy is probably the most common condition affecting the autonomic nerves.

TILT TABLE TESTING

Tilt table testing is performed to look for causes of repeated dizziness or passing out spells.

This is an easily performed procedure in our laboratory under the guidance of Dr. C. Toth and Dr. L. Wong (Cardiologist). Our cardiac technician performs this test in a monitored situation where we examine your blood pressure and heart rate while your body is in different positions.
